Mold Testing is the process by which a certified trained professional performs simple
qualitative and or complex quantitative diagnostics. Many of the pollutants that effect the
indoor air quality cannot be detected by visual inspection alone and require more
comprehensive testing. The following tests assist inspectors in determining both the type
and levels of indoor pollutants. Mold testing is the crucial first step in analyzing if mold
removal is necessary!
Two primary ways to test for mold:
Non-culturable AIR sampling
Non-culturable spore trap samplers draw measured volumes of air through the sampling
device for a specified length of time. Particles in the air (spores, dust, etc.) impact onto a
sticky surface and are "trapped" for later analysis. A minimum of two samples are taken, one
outdoors for a baseline and at least one indoor sample.
SURFACE sampling
Mold testing for surface samples are taken by tape lift imprint, by swabbing the suspect
surface with a culture swab, or by submitting a bulk sample of the suspect surface. The
sample then undergoes a microscopic exam by an accredited lab to show whether mold is
present and what type of mold it is.
